Welcome, JP fans, to the February edition of the JP BULLETin.
At this point, I think it’s safe to say that 2021 isn’t looking like a return to normalcy. It might just be that this ride doesn’t have any brakes. We hope you and yours are holding up alright and have your seatbelts on.
It was pretty obvious that we piqued some interest last month with our little teaser video. So, we wanted to pull back the curtain a little more this month for our loyal BULLETin readers. Let’s squash a few rumors, shall we?
The big news for 2021 is the release of the new JP-5™ pistol caliber carbine.
You can guess at some of the details by the image above. This one has been in the works for a couple of years now to make sure we got it right. We were looking forward to a big SHOT Show reveal, but that obviously didn’t quite pan out for a number of reasons.
It’s no surprise that the GMR-15™ has been an amazing platform for us, and truth be told, we sell more PCCs than rifles these days. We’re pretty confident that we’ve done about as well as anyone could do with a direct blowback operating system. So, we started looking at other options…
As many have guessed, the JP-5™ draws inspiration from the legendary H&K MP5 (and its civilian equivalent, the SP5). If you have shot one of these, you probably recognize their strengths. The best of these is the low impulse and subsequent fast sight recovery compared to blowback operating systems. There’s also its reputation for high reliability.
So, why not an MP5 clone? Well, the platform has some undeniable drawbacks, especially in ergonomics where it falls far short of the MSR platform. The magazine catch is cumbersome and slow, and the safety lever is unreachable for any normal human being.
Naturally, it’s not compatible with any MSR accessories. Beyond that, the fire control system, even at its best, is totally inadequate for a precision match-grade system. The barrel assembly is not free-floated, compromising accuracy potential. And finally, it doesn’t use a pistol-compatible magazine.
We wanted the JP-5™ to take all the strengths of the MP5 and patch up the weaknesses with MSR ergonomics and the Glock magazine compatibility everyone loves. The final product will be the perfect platform for the serious competitor as well as those in search of a no-compromise duty/defense carbine. We’ll be showing off more of the internals for the JP-5™ and going into more of the technicals in the near future. The big takeaway for you PCC shooters is that the roller-delay of the operating system allows for a much lighter operating system when compared to a direct blowback. Less weight means softer cycling means less movement means faster follow-up shots.
That should sound pretty familiar. It’s really just finding a new way to work the same magic for the PCC that so many of our rifle components have done for years. If you like that JP feel, we know you’re going to love JP-5™.
The big question is, when you can get your hands on one, right? It’s been tricky calling our shots with the industry the way it is, but we’re targeting Q3. No promises, but that’s the lay of the land as far as we can see it right now.
The other big question we're seeing is about price. The JP-5™ is a more complex design with majority unique parts, so it will carry a higher price than the GMR-15™. That will put it closer to the price of our small-frame billet ARs.
Because of that, we don't view the JP-5™ as a replacement for the GMR-15™. The GMR is a great platform that we'll be offering for years to come. For those who want the absolute state of the art, that's where the JP-5™ comes in.
We know it’s hard to wait, but always remember we’re right there with you. This has been one of the most exciting projects many of us have worked on here at JP.
With hopefully a little of your curiosity sated, let’s hit up this month’s BULLETin business.
In our February Pro Posts, we have a how-to article for you outdoorsmen on planning the best hunting/fishing combo trip. We also have the man himself, Josh Froelich back to talk about 2x4 division and why it’s the best way to 3-Gun.
As you might have noticed, we’re taking a different approach with the “New Product” section this year. Not only will you find new releases, but we’re including all aspects of our product line. So, you can expect not just info about the products we offer, but how they work and how you can use them or use them better.
This month, we have another double-feature from Josh Froelich with after-action thoughts on his rifles following his first big Texas hog hunt. Then, John Paul weighs in with Peter Johnson from Archway Defense about the success behind our flash hider designs.
We hope everyone finds something of interest here for February. With that, we look forward to seeing you next month as the shooting season really starts to kick off.
Until then, good shooting!
