Welcome back, JP fans. Here’s your May 2021 installment of the JP BULLETin.
We don’t know about you, but it’s been quite the month around here and for the JP team. A couple weeks back was the 2021 World Speed Shooting Competition down in Talladega, AL and JP made a great showing in PCC. In PCC Irons, Chris Barrett took first followed by Bridget and Emily Cunningham in second and third. They didn’t slouch over in PCC Open with four of the top seven finishes going to JP shooters, including the inimitable Steve Foster.
Moving up to last weekend, our shooters put in some awesome performances down at the Magpul Texas 3-Gun Championship. The ladies of JP didn’t fail to impress with Lanny Barnes and Dakota Overland taking first and second in Ladies Tactical. And of course, the man himself, Josh Froelich dominated 2x4 division.
Team JP never disappoints.
Moving over to our JP-5™ update for May, we had some great trial runs. We brought a demo rifle up to a local USPSA match in our backyard for people to try out. We also had one down at World Speed for the Steel Challenge crew to try out, which our buddy Steve Foster gets into down in the New Products segment this month. Both demo rifles ran like sewing machines, and we couldn’t have been more pleased.
We also had a couple of major private outings with the JP-5™ this month for some destructive testing. It's our stance that it's due diligence for any firearms manufacturer to know what could happen in a worst case scenario. We'll be going into more detail about these test in a post next week, but the results were...surprising.
For these tests, John Paul loaded some special “self-destruct” rounds, which were way beyond even our standard “proof loads.” We won’t divulge the recipe, but suffice it to say, they were designed to easily cause a catastrophic failure without a bore obstruction.
From that perspective, the test was a complete failure. The JP-5™ cycled these little death capsules without so much as a hiccup. Apparently, the action is nearly indestructible by conventional standards.
For the next test, we fixed two more projectiles right in front of the chamber as a solid obstruction and gave it another go. All three projectiles were expelled from the barrel, and the case extracted and ejected as normal!
This did finally produce a critical part failure but remarkably little damage anywhere else. Afterwards, we continued to fire proof loads though the rifle, and it handled those with no problems despite the damage. Bottom line, we were nothing short of astounded by the results!
While it's not nearly as exciting as we expected, you can check out the testing video above. Considering how much energy was involved, it is shocking to see how normally the action seems to cycle. The only giveaway is how much the rifle moves afterwards taking the whole testing fixture with it.
In the end, we still haven't found the true "breaking point" for this platform. Pretty amazing. Make sure to check Facebook and Instagram next week for more specifics on this testing if you're interested.
With that, let’s roll into our BULLETin content for the month.
Down in the Pro Posts, we have two of our favorite shooters sitting down for a chat. Josh Froelich and Cory K. met up at the Magpul Texas 3-Gun Championship to hash out the many sports and rifles Cory fills his time with. Then, we have a bit of education for you aspiring hunters with the Night Vision 101.
Then, there’s our Product Focus pieces for May. First, our own Dustin Sanchez hashes out critical accessories for precision rifle competition with Blue Steel Ranch lead instructor Brian Whalen. Then, we get Steve Foster’s take on how he sees the JP-5™ changing the Steel Challenge game once it drops.
And that’s about it for this month. As a reminder, don’t miss the opportunity to make it down to the BSR for a class. We know that ammo is tight, but we do have some available in popular calibers if you sign up.
With that, enjoy the nice weather, and good shooting!
